One Single Impression: Departed

I was sifting through some old recipes this week, and came across one handwritten by my Grandma. She's been gone for almost 20 years, and I was surprised at the power of my emotions when I recognized her delicate handwriting. Oh, how I miss every one of my grandparents. Their love is so special. THE VISIT

A shaky scrawl
On a recipe card
A moment in time
From the depths
Of my heart
And it hits me hard
She’s been gone
For so very long

A sting of tears
A tender comfort
There's an angel
On my shoulder
Visiting again
Stirring up lost love
A warm touch
Where none was

I’m nearly old
And almost young
Words stick to
My tongue but
Her words
On this card
Help me feel
Less alone

A moment’s rest
While I ache
From this crack
In my heart
But her visit
Softens my face
Comfort in this place
And the tears, they
Silently flow.

Very well done, heart-felt piece. I still remember my grandmother's bread she made. Hot out of the oven with butter. I can remember asking for another, as child can do. I miss her also.

My grandmother's words from the past do this to me, too. You captured that movement through time and space via the heart so very well.

I have read one, of Brenda's but her rendition was about how nostalgic are love letters than what emails and text messages can do.

This one, hand written by your granny is as nostalgic too. Imagine, after so long years, and they still exists? That really touches the heart though how long they've departed.

maybe i would keep mine, too. those scribbled by my bare hands so that some day, my kids or grand kids may feel the same way like you do!

Nice one!

Dear Sweetest-
(I liked writing that!)

My heart ached a little along with yours. Indeed grandparent love is so special and so needed in our world of chopped up family structures.

Lovely--thank you!

You said this so tenderly... I've been remembering my own departed grandparents lately... There is something so powerful seeing handwriting, isn't there? Thank you for this...

A beautiful poem, obviously heartfelt. And what delightful writing your Grandmother had.

"stirring up love" - perfect choice of words to help describe how you felt about the 'recipe'. Nice job!

Grandma was my confidante and best friend. I think of her every time I use one of the handkerchief she embroideried initials on for my Christmas present.
Also whenever I think or see chiropractor, one of those killed her, I am sad. She was going to her for what ailed her while all the time she had leukemia without knowing it. The chiropractor did not check biological functions, etc, she died from that within a year.

loved this! I, too felt a sting of tears as I read your poem- beautiful! This summer I took a buch of handwritten recipes that I found going through my mom's stuff and scanned them and made a memory book with recipes and pictures. What a treasure!

OH, well put! My Nana has been gone or 10 years now and I still miss her. Her handwriting used to be so beautiful and perfect but towards the end it was also a "shakey scrawl". Your poem reminded me of this and of the rich life she had. This poem is wonderful. You drew me in and carried my heart along with you.

A human moment, captured and put into words as only you could do.

If this happened to me, I would have thought about where my grandma was and what she was doing when she jotted down the recipe. Then I would have smiled for a bit and yes, eventually, shed silent tears.
